Get Back in control

Most golfers are happy to break 80.

Few dream of breaking 60, especially in a tournament or 'friendly' game with business associates. Assuming you've mastered the fundamentals of your shots, the challenge to breaking 60 is being consistent on every hole. To develop this consistency, you must learn the mental toughness art of staying in control regardless of the distractions surrounding you.

Perspective: Geiberger's method for staying in control

The first player to break 60 on the PGA Tour may surprise you. It wasn't Hogan, Snead, Palmer or Nicklaus. It was Al Geiberger.

That's right. Geiberger shot a shocking 59 at the 1977 Memphis Classic, held at the Colonial Country Club, ranked by Golf Digest as one of the One Hundred Greatest Courses. Since then only two other players have broken 60: Chip Beck in 1991 and David Duval in 1999.

After a notable career on the PGA Tour, Geiberger moved to the Senior Tour, where he has won at least 10 times. Geiberger's method of staying in control is to invoke perspective on the golf course. "If you hit a bad shot, just tell yourself it's great to be alive, relaxing, and walking around on a beautiful golf course," says Geiberger. "The next shot will be better."

When you are faced with distractions on the course, you need to get back control. It's perfectly natural to feel frustrated and agitated on the course, but you don't want to feed these feelings. Instead, get back in control by focusing on something interesting, or something that has an element of beauty.

Knock down That Flagstick

Tom Watson's only win at the U.S. Open in 1982 amazes everyone.

Nicklaus, playing two groups ahead of Watson in the final round, charges into a share of the lead with five consecutive birdies. When Watson reaches the par-3 17th, the two are tied, but Nicklaus is safely in the clubhouse at 4 under par and 284. Watson hits his tee shot on 17 into the deep rough. He faces an almost impossible shot downhill on an extremely fast green, sloping down to the Pacific Ocean.

Nicklas, in the clubhouse, is aware of Watson's terrible predicament. He appears confident. Is he on his way to an unprecedented fifth U.S. Open? Watson, and his caddy, Bruce Edwards, a close friend, stand in the tangled grass.

Edwards says, "Get it close." Not likely. Not from that stuff, and with no where to land the ball. Not on Sunday. Not with the U.S Open at stake.

Watson smiles and replies: "I'm not going to get it close. I'm going to hole it."

The caddie pulls the bag away, thinking, "Yeah, right, just make a 3 and let's win it on the 18th."

Watson punches the chip shot out of the tangled mass. Amazingly, it hits the flagstick and drops in the hole, giving him a near-miraculous birdie... and the win. Watson also birdies the 18th, giving him a winning margin of two.

There is a simple mental toughness lesson in Watson's story: on the golf course, you want to be very target-oriented. Often the target is the hole itself. If you're the kind of person who responds to an aggressive thought, you can say to yourself, 'Knock down that flagstick!'

When it comes to your mental game, nothing beats simplicity. When you're feeling pressured, get the target down, and everything else will take care of itself.

Prevent Golf Frustration Like a Pro

Whenever you become super-frustrated on the golf course, the first place to look is your expectations.

Expectations are at the root of most frustrations.

When you are performing well and suddenly your opponent sinks a long chip or comes out of the woods to make a par, you know what I'm talking about. Instantly, you become frustrated.
Your frustration causes you to try and guide or steer the ball, rather than swinging freely.

In the Tournament Players Championship several years ago, Tom Kite and Chip Beck were the final twosome. Chip started out horribly, making four bogeys on the front side shooting 40.
But Tom did not expect Chip to keep playing that badly. Instead, he assumed Chip would be as hot on the back side as he had been cold on the front. And Chip did get hot, shooting 31.
Tom stuck to his game plan.

At the final hole, Tom teed off with a two-stroke lead. Chip had a tricky, downhill putt of 25 feet.Tom immediately assumed Chip would make that putt. Sure enough, he did.If Chip's putt had surprised or unnerved Tom, his next putt would have suddenly become much harder.

But Tom had prepared his expectations perfectly.

His emotional state did not change when Chip's ball disappeared into the hole.
Tom holed his par putt and won the tournament.

The simple act of carefully monitoring your expectations -- about course conditions, opponents, even your own shots -- will prevent frustration and keep you collected on the golf course.

Breaking A Score Barrier

Breaking 80 (or any other type of golf score barrier) is tough.

But according to the pros, shooting a low score on Sunday to win a tournament is tougher.

When Mike Weir won the Masters for the first time in 2003, he learned that winning required a whole new mindset.

He reveals:

'What's important to me is not only thatI won the Masters, but HOW I won the Masters.

On the last few holes the only person that could affect me winning the tournament was me, and I had no margin for error.'

Since taking responsibility for his mindset and winning the Masters, Weir is more patient.

He can play poorly in the first three days, but instead of getting frustrated, he stays cool:

'At a recent tournament, I knew it would come together, that it was just a matter of time. That's exactly what happened on Sunday, and I made a bunch of birdies and ended up 3rd. Before I would have pressedtoo much and ended up 20th.'

Mental Toughness Exercise

We can learn from Mike.

The most important lesson he provides is that there is no substitute for patience on the golf course.

Unique Mental Challenge of Golf

One reason golf is mentally challenging is because you have so little contact with the ball.
You only make contact with the ball for fractions of a second over a 4-5 hour time frame.
This lack of contact makes it easier for you to lose your concentration.

There is more.

Four or five hours is a long time to maintain concentration on anything. Cardiovascular surgeons have the same concentration challenge as golfers. Coronary bypass (heart) surgery lasts an average of 5 hours, and it's typical for these surgeons to do 3 of these a day. That means they are doing 10-15 hours of operating a day. These surgeons know that they can't maintain total intensity and concentration on everything they do during that time.

Their solution is to teach themselves how to manage the ebb and flow of the operation. During the mundane parts of the operation, they get into a lighter concentration flow.
But once the patient's heart is stopped, they need to get the operation done in less than an hour. During that time, they have absolute, total focus. They submerge the mind so that everything around them is blacked out.*

In golf, you too must master the ebb and flow of the game. Having too much focus for too long a time can actually tighten your muscles and hamper your swing.
So, your job is to learn how to build your concentration before each shot and 'turn it off' between shots.

Mental Toughness Exercise
One technique you can use to sharpen your concentration is to visualize your shot before you hit it.

I suggest you do this as you're walking up to the ball.

Like Tiger, stare at your target and form a visual picture of the shot in your mind. See the ball flying on a specific line towards its final target. If you work at this, soon you will be able to maintain your focus of attention on the hole the way the pros do.

The 12-foot putt on the 72nd hole of the Senior Players Championship gave Bobby Wadkins his first major title... and a sense of relief.

Wadkins needed to sink the putt to win the tournament.

54-year old Wadkins had made five straight birdies on the back nine to take the lead, but a horrendous bunker shot meant he had to sink the putt to win the tournament.

Wadkins was feeling the pressure.

After all, it was only a month ago that Phil Mickelson's double bogey on the 18th hole cost him a chance to win the 2006 U.S. Open.

"Anyone who says they aren't feeling the pressure at that stage of the game is telling a lie," said Wadkins, who shot a 4-under 68 and was 14 under for the tournament. "The tournament
should have been over and I was giving it away."

Wadkins has just admitted what every good golfer knows:

How to Really Fix Your Swing

Most golfers are fanatical about the mechanics of their swing.

They're constantly trying to adjust their swing mechanics so they can make the ball go where they want it to go. As a result, they have a running dialogue in their minds about their grip, their arms, their shoulders, their head--the list is endless. This obsession is a huge disadvantage, because you cannot think about the mechanics of your swing and swing properly at the same time.

You, however, can be different.

You can approach golf with a strong belief in your body's ability to self-correct mistakes. This is what will lead to confidence and consistency on the golf course.

This state is also known as The Zone.

The Zone

The zone is your ideal 'inner climate' on the golf course.

You play better golf when you have the following feelings:

--When you feel relaxed and focused.

--When you feel optimistic and positive.

--When you feel a genuine sense of enjoyment in your play.

--When you feel mentally alert and filled with energy.

--When you feel highly self-confident.*

Most importantly, when you are in the zone,

--You are not focused on whether you hit the ball well.

--You are not focused on your score.

--You are not focused on your emotions.

You are in the present.

You are completely absorbed in what you are doing.

One of the easiest ways you can get into the zone is to develop a much clearer overall picture of your swing in your mind. Here is a visual that can help from David Leadbetter:

"Imagine your trunk turning within the confines of a barrel while the club moves up and down along the rim of a wheel."

As you develop this picture in your mind, it releases you from worrying about the individual parts of your swing. The visual image relaxes you and releases your body to hit the ball without striving too much.

The Rich Jerk Really Has Ticked Some People Off !!

You can see that a couple of weeks ago I told you about The Rich Jerk, the mystery man whose new book just had to be read.

His approach is obnoxious, to say the least, but I rated the chap who told me about it, so I invited you to check out The Rich Jerk's website anyway.

As expected, the Rich Jerk's approach really ticked off some of you, as it had me, initially. On the other hand, many of you found his website to be entertaining and his message to be right on target.

My associate has also received quite a bit of feedback !! For example:

"..you were right, this guy's TOTAL JERK. OK, he's rich, he takes vacations all the time and has money to burn, he's got a big house and a bunch of fancy cars, but come on, does he have to be so &^%$ obnoxious about it?"

"Hey, you asked for feedback on the Rich Jerk, so here you go. I actually ordered the Jerk's book and I totally expected to hate it and demand my money back. I was surprised to find that if you hang in long enough to get past all the hype and hot air, his book is one of the best I've read on how to start a high profit online business from scratch."

All golfers know that there's nothing like an excellent start to put you in a confident frame of mind.

Recently several Tour players were asked, "What's your strategy for psyching out an opponent during match play?"

Here's what Billy Mayfair said:

"Hit a great first shot--that puts pressure on your opponent right from the start."

To "crush it" right from the start, you need to discover your best focus while golfing.

Most golfers are overly focused on either

a) shooting a low score or

b) hitting excellent shots

Sound familiar?

The problem with these focuses is that they usually raise your score.

There's a paradox in golf: the more we try to lower our score, the more our game deteriorates.

This is because the ball is not under our direct and immediate control.

The more we try to guide, steer, and control it, the more we tighten up, and the worse we play.

Instead of focusing on an outcome you cannot control, I suggest a process focus when you golf.
A process focus is a goal under your direct and immediate control.

Here are some examples of an excellent process focus for golf:

1. I want to visualize the flight path of my shot with clarity.

2. I want to keep my alignment consistent and my club face square to the ball.

3. I want to read the greens effectively and learn about this course.

4. I want to keep my eye on the ball as I make contact with it.

A process focus keeps you relaxed, loose, and paying attention to a specific objective that helps your game.

Next time you golf, keep your mind on your process focus.

I know we all see lots of hype on how people are making a fortune out of the internet. And I have to say when I first saw the ad for The Rich Jerk (and I don't might admitting it) that I was taken completely aback. This guy is rude, obnoxious, smart mouthed, cocky, and just downright insulting.

My initial response was: WHAT AN IDIOTIC JERK!

Then a chap who really knows what he's talking about in this area, told me that he had ordered the Rich Jerk's materials and was amazed at the quality of the content, the sound advice, and the strategies for making big profits online. He said he learned things that he didn't even know about online marketing, and he's been doing this for years.

His recommendation is that anyone who is interested in selling online should just get past all the hype and outrageous smugness in the ad and just read this book, it's that good.

You may find the ad offensive and very irritating, but as my colleague put it:

"I can now see why he's a Rich Jerk, instead of a poor one..."
